A celebration of the near completion of the first phase of the downtown Street Scape project was combined with a Juneteenth celebration Saturday in front of the Jefferson County Courthouse.

Before a formal ribbon cutting, Mayor Shirley Washington talked to Deltaplex News about the opening.

Washington said the project is basically complete from the Martha Mitchell Expressway off Walnut Street, down Barraque Street to State Street, and all the way down to 4th at the railroad tracks.

The Mayor said as the project moves along, storefronts will open and she thinks there will be special days like First Saturdays or First Thursdays or something similar to bring people downtown to socialize, fellowship, and enjoy the revitalization of Pine Bluff.

Washington was also asked about the significance of having the streetscape opening on the same day as the first Federal Juneteenth holiday.

Pine Bluff Economic and Community Development Director Larry Matthews was asked about Washington’s description of the project being nearly finished.
