A Benton man was killed Tuesday while fleeing from Lonoke County Sheriff’s deputies when the ATV he was riding failed to stop at a stop sign and was hit by a vehicle.

According to a preliminary report, Richard Covert, 42, was westbound on Ghering Road at 1:02 p.m. and failed to stop at the stop sign on Ghering Road and John Shelton Road.

A 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by Billy Joe Siegrist, 25, of Jacksonville was northbound on John Shelton Road and  hit the side of the ATV, throwing Covert from the ATV.

After impact, the truck landed in a ditch on the west side of the roadway on its passenger side.

Siegrist and a passenger in his vehicle, Shannon Siegrist, 24, also of Jacksonville were injured and taken to a Little Rock hospital.

The death was the 580th so far this year on the state’s highways.
