The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff has officially named Alonzo Hampton as its next head football coach, and Hampton gave his first interview as head coach of the Golden Lions to LaRon Marbley of Deltaplex Radio and Deltaplex News Thursday afternoon.

Hampton, who has served as an assistant coach at UAPB previously in his career, said that he is happy to be back at the place that gave him his first shot at coaching.

Hampton said that he has had two places that he has wanted to have an opportunity to become head coach at. One is his alma matter at ULM, where he just served as assistant head coach, and UAPB where he is now the head coach.

Hampton said that he and his staff are ready to recruit, and local talent will be something they will look for.

He also said Arkansas is the Natural State, and there are a lot of “diamonds”, and they just have to find them.

Hampton’s first head coaching job was at Dumas High School, and he said he has learned a lot since then in addition to surrounding himself with people in key spots and key positions that have helped him learn how to make things work.
