Alonzo Hampton was formally introduced as the 22nd head football coach of the UAPB Golden Lions Tuesday afternoon at the STEM building on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
Following the introductory press conference Director of Athletics Chris Robinson and Hampton both visited with the media to discuss the hire.
Robinson said Hampton’s tenacity played a big role in him landing the job.
Hampton helped to build a SWAC Championship winning team as an assistant, and that stood out to Robinson as well.
Hampton said coaching for four years at UAPB showed him that he wanted to eventually come back to as head coach.
He said that building relationships on the recruiting trail will be vital, and that he and his staff will ‘do more with less’.
During the press conference Hampton said that recruiting will start locally, in the delta. He spoke more about that with the media following the press conference.
Hampton said that recruiting will begin with the current UAPB football players, saying the transfer portal is shut down, and he has four months to show the team what he can do.
