A $200,000 bond was set Friday for a Pine Bluff teenager accused of firing a shot at a person on the campus of UAPB and injuring two people.
Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set the bond after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge Derrick Jiner III, 18, with criminal attempt capital murder, first-degree battery and possession of a gun on school property.
During the court hearing, Deputy Prosecutor Joe West explained how the incident began Oct. 24.
Campus Police Lt. Theodore Hasse reported that Jiner said he was inside his vehicle when a person passed him holding a handgun and he got out of his vehicle and fired a shot at that individual.
West said that one shot hit two people, one of them critically.
Prosecutors asked for a $500,000 bond because of the seriousness of the event but an attorney from the James’ Law Firm, which has been hired to represent Jiner asked for a $50,000 bond, saying that Jiner has no prior criminal record and, based on his statement, was acting in self-defense.
The judge told Jines to come back to court Dec. 13.
