A $15,000 bond was set Wednesday for a Jefferson County man accused of breaking into a parked truck and taking tools and copper wire.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set the bond after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge Joseph Chowning, 63, with breaking or entering.

During the court hearing, Deputy Prosecutor Ty Spradlin said on Jan. 7, police were sent  to the Motel 6 on Market Steet in response to a reported theft.

Chowning was located on Tuesday and admitted being with the other suspect the day of the theft but denied any involvement.

Spradlin said Chowning is on parole and is listed as an absconder. He has multiple prior felony theft convictions with the last one in Jefferson County being in 2008.

He was told to come back to court Feb. 19.
