Three people were killed in two separate traffic accidents in Arkansas Monday, two in Craighead County, the third in White County.

According to a preliminary report, the driver of a 2021 Dodge Charger, who has not been identified, was northbound in the southbound lane of I555 going in the wrong direction when the vehicle struck a 2015 Toyota Corolla in the outside lane.

Both the drive of the Dodge and the driver of the Toyota, Devin William Dicus, 35, of Jonesboro were killed.

A third vehicle, a 2017 Ford F-150 that was southbound behind the Toyota hit the Toyota from behind, with the Toyota coming to final rest across the outside southbound lane.

The driver of the Ford was not injured.

That accident was reported at 3:40 a.m.

In rural White County, Hershel R. Akers Jr., 56, of Pangburn was killed when the 2016 Toyota Sciion he was driving was hit from behind by a 2015 Chevrolet Trax, driven by Julie A. May, 49, of Letona that was westbound on Arkansas Highway 16.

The vehicle Akers was driving was stopped at the time behind a 2012 Dodge Ram which was also stopped. After Akers vehicle was hit from behind, it hit the rear of the Dodge and Akers was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Dodge Ram was not injured.

The three deaths bring to 384 the number of people who have died on the state’s highways so far this year.
