1964 Olympic champion and former Pine Bluff native passes away at 84

Dallas Long, the 1964 Olympic shot put champion in Tokyo and multiple world record-breaker, has died at the age of 84.

Dallas Crutcher Long was born in Pine Bluff (AR) on June 13, 1940 and passed on Sunday (Nov. 10) in Whitefish, Montana of natural causes.

Following his very early years in Pine Bluff, Dallas would attend North Phoenix High School in Arizona and Collegiately at University of Southern California.

Dallas was a three-time NCAA shot put champion at USC and considered one of the world’s best athletes in the 1960s.

From 1959 to 1965, Long set the shot put world record 11 times and was ranked No. 1 in the world three times. His best effort was 67-10.25

As well as his Olympic title win and world records, he claimed Olympic bronze at the 1960 Games in Rome.

After competing in sports, Long became a doctor and dentist.

He was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1996

He is survived by his four children Kristen Long, Kelly Nordell, Karin Grandsire and Ian Long, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Long will be honored in 2025 by the Jefferson County Sports Hall of Fame in Pine Bluff.
