A $10,000 cash-only bond was set Friday for a Jefferson County man who was arrested Thursday driving a truck that had been reported stolen.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set the bond after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge Jimmy Turner, 39, with theft by receiving and felony fleeing.

Reading from a probable cause affidavit from Sheriff’s Investigator Charles White, Deputy Prosecutor Caleb Conrad said a sheriff’s deputy was patrolling in the area of Highways 365 and 104 when he saw a white Dodge pickup with no bed that matched the description of a truck that had been reported stolen.

The truck was pulling a utility trailer and turned onto Gravel Pit Road when the deputy attempted a traffic stop. Conrad said the driver, later identified as Turner, refused to stop and drove off the road to the landfill area before getting back on the road and heading to Interstate 530 traveling north.

The trailer fell off, hitting the guardrail and partially blocking the roadway. Conrad described what happened next.

When Turner was questioned, he denied knowing the truck was stolen. He said he had bought it for $300 and bought the trailer for $150. He said he fled because he believed he had warrants for his arrest.

Conrad said Turner has two active cases in Jefferson County Circuit Court, one for commercial burglary, the other on drug charges. Turner was told to come back to court Aug. 23.
